Why Medical Classification is the Ultimate Hurdle in Indian Railways

Indian Railways operates one of the most rigorous occupational health and medical examination frameworks in the public sector. Unlike other government services where medical tests are routine formalities, Railway candidates who pass all written and aptitude stages can be unconditionally disqualified if they fail their assigned medical standard.

Medical standards in Indian Railways are classified into A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, and C2 based on safety-critical responsibilities and operational exposure.

1. The Safety-Critical Standards: A1 and A2

A1 Category (Assistant Loco Pilots & Train Drivers)

The most stringent standard in the entire public sector:

  • Distant Vision: Must be 6/6 in both eyes completely without glasses.
  • Near Vision: Snellen 0.6 in both eyes without glasses.
  • LASIK / Refractive Surgery: Strictly PROHIBITED. Any surgical intervention (LASIK, PRK, ICL) is detectable via slit-lamp examination and results in instant permanent disqualification.
  • Color Perception: Must pass Ishihara color plate tests with 100% accuracy.
  • Night Vision & Binocular Vision: Compulsory dark-adaptation tests and field-of-vision assessments.

A2 Category (Station Masters, Traffic Apprentices, Guard / Train Managers)

  • Distant Vision: Must be 6/9 in both eyes without glasses.
  • Color Vision & Night Vision: Mandatory tests for signal color recognition (Red, Green, Amber).
  • LASIK Rule: Not permitted for entry-level direct recruits in safety-critical operational posts.

2. Technical & Support Standards: B1, B2, C1, and C2

| Medical Standard | Key Railway Posts | Distant Visual Acuity | Glasses / Lens Power Limit | Color Perception Test | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | B1 | Junior Engineers (JE), Technicians, Workshop Supervisors | 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses | Corrective lens power cannot exceed +4.0 Dioptres | Mandatory (Passing required) | | B2 | Depot Store Keepers, Electrical Support Cadres | 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses | Corrective lens power cannot exceed +4.0 Dioptres | Relaxed for non-signaling duties | | C1 | Commercial Clerks, Ticket Collectors, Office Superintendents | 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses | Glasses permitted with no strict dioptre cap | No color vision requirement | | C2 | Accounts Clerks, Typists, Data Entry Executives | 6/12, Nil with or without glasses | Focus primarily on near-vision task endurance | No color vision requirement |

3. The Decisive Impact of Color Blindness

Color vision deficiency (Daltonism) is the number one cause of medical rejection in Indian Railways. If an applicant has even a mild red-green color blindness:

  • They are instantly disqualified from A1 (ALP), A2 (Station Master), and B1 (Junior Engineer) posts.
  • They can only be considered for administrative desk positions under Category C1 or C2 if they selected those preferences during initial form submission.
